Celebrate the art of Matthew Smith, the artist behind Matt Smith Makes, at our Artist Reception for the Main Library's featured Art Wall! Matt's artwork has been delighting visitors to the Main Library since the fall with a colorful array of painted vegetables and nostalgia-inducing canned goods.
Matthew Smith's exhibit is a collection of paintings that was created over the course of 2023 and 2024 reflecting on the West Virginia sustenance farming traditions. The inventiveness, practicality, and fierce independence of Mountaineers inspired the collection of work, where Matt attempts to capture the magic that is growing your own food from the ground to feed your family. Whether on clay-packed ridges, rocky embankments, to rich river valleys, the food traditions of West Virginia and the Greater Appalachian Region are a massive influence on Matt's approach to this work.
