The Advisory Board, for the St. Albans Library, is proud to present St Albans Writes...a monthly speaker series featuring local authors. Doak Turner is a 1977 graduate of St. Albans High School. His inspirational first book, (A Crazy Journey And Finding My True Identity) chronicles his career that began in radio advertising sales in Charleston, WV, then to Charlotte, NC. Working with concert and event promoters as clients led to the world of entertainment and sports for Turner. He met and sometimes worked and built relationships with many of the biggest names in the entertainment business. Meeting 100's of artists backstage, as a ring announcer for NWA pro wrestling in the mid-80's, growing syndication and sales with NASCAR Country Radio Network, promoting Arena Football in Charlotte, and pro tennis events in the Carolinas were quite rewarding, and led to Turner moving to Nashville, TN, to write songs and established two unique online music industry businesses: The Nashville Muse, and Music Starts Here. The websites and online communities became a GPS for creators in Nashville. For over ten years Turner also hosted a dinner for songwriters in his home in Nashville. “Third Sunday at Three,” became a songwriters’ staple event, and helped Turner to be named Nashville Songwriters Association International Ambassador of the Year in 2012.
Turner was inspired in 2020 to do what he called, a "brain dump" and write 100+ of his stories of working in the entertainment industry, meeting people, building relationships over the past 40+ years. Those stories became, "A Crazy Journey" (And Finding My True Identity). Turner is now happy in life, living on Lake Norman, NC, with his “awesome woman” Kathy and "Flex" their French Bulldog.
