Library Catalog Upgrade

Library Catalog Upgrade Banner Decemeber 8th

What is Changing?

The Kanawha County Public Library system is pleased to announce the launch of the Koha library management system on Monday, December 8. This system will manage KCPL circulation records, online services, and patron accounts, as well as the new Aspen Discovery library catalog.

Some of features of the new online catalog:
  • The Aspen Discovery catalog provides a powerful, modern system design – making it easier for patrons to explore KCPL’s collections and services from one convenient location.
  • A new linked account feature has been added. This feature allows patrons to share library account information, such as checkouts, holds, and billing information, with another account holder. Parents can use the option to manage their children’s library card account.
  • Patrons can now check out up to 100 items
  • Video game checkouts have increased to 5
  • Fines for late returns have been removed

Service Interruptions

There will be some service interruptions as we update the catalog to the new system.

What will be affected:
  • In order for patrons to save their reading history or any lists they have created, they will need to copy and save their history and lists prior to Thursday, December 4.
  • KCPL online services, including Hoopla, WVDELI, and the KCPL Mobile App, will be unavailable from December 5 through December 7.
  • All KCPL libraries to be closed on Saturday, December 6th and Sunday, December 7.
  • KCPL libraries will be open with limited services only on Thursday, December 4th and Friday, December 5th, closing both days at 5:00 pm.
  • As part of the transition, all library card holders will need to reset their password to access their account. The reset cannot take place until the day of the software launch – Monday, December 8.
What will be the same after December 8:
  • Patrons with existing Library cards and accounts in good standing will be able to check out materials at all locations and continue using KCPL's online resources
  • Online platforms, such as WVDeli and Hoopla, will be available for check out as usual
  • Patron computers will remain available
